Cedrela spp. seeds from eight different provenances were planted in Puerto Rico and St. Croix (Virgin Islands) in August and September 1969. The provenances range from northern Argentina to Mexico and the Antilles. The purpose of the study is to test the adaptability of each provenance under field conditions in Puerto Rico and St. Croix. This report corresponds to the nursery stage.
With a total of 48 replications in the Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, nursery (1,152 trees, 6 treatments) and 64 replications in the St. Croix nursery (1,280 trees, 5 treatments), the analysis showed higher yields for the Guanacaste, Costa Rica, provenance (treatment) and lower yields for the Argentine provenance. Yields were measured by height, diameter, Hypsipyla grandella attack, mortality, and number of branches before planting in the field.
