In 1994 the techniques for estimating national production for the Sri Lankan fishery for large pelagic fish were revised as part of a TCP project between FAO and NARA. A new sampling strategy to provide the data required for this analysis was effected from January 1994. The new techniques provide a more representative sampling of the fishery, including sampling in areas that have previously been inaccessible due to security problems. Attention has also been given to collecting information on all of the major components of the catch and so for the first time it is possible to examine the contribution of the major shark species to the catch. Sampling also attempted to collect data on the landings of mammals (dolphins) taken by the fishery. The following report details the steps taken in estimating the 1994 production for the fishery - the first year for which a complete data set for the new estimation procedures was available. Catch rates are also briefly discussed. A comparison of es timates made with the new techniques with estimates made using earlier methods is also undertaken.
