The purpose of the present paper is to review briefly the growth of population
and the expansion of food production in India in the past quarter century and to
assess the prospects of achieving a balance between population and food in the
near future. It will be evident that, in spite of vigorous official action on both
fronts, namely population and food, a balance between the two is by no means in
sight.
