Agrifood systems are dynamic and constantly evolving. Technologies can greatly support food safety activities, including lab work, evidence syntheses, risk assessments, including in silico model-based, surveillance, outbreak investigations, inspections and border controls, bioinformatics and trend analysis, as well as overall data management. In parallel, ensuring the safety of foods derived from evolving food production systems is important for public health and trade practices. The work of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) covers both aspects of this two-way relationship to promote safe and responsible innovation in efficient, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems transformation.
