Descripción
Rural women are the backbone of the rural economy representing about 43 percent of the agricultural labour force in developing countries. In the Asia-Pacific region, rural women play a key role in food systems and rural household livelihood holding main responsibilities in food production, sale and procurement, food preparation and distribution, family food and nutrition security, as well as child rearing and care giving. As such, gender equality and women’s empowerment in rural areas are central to FAO’s mandate consisting in sustainable agricultural production and rural development for the elimination of hunger and poverty.
The Gender Newsletter Asia Pacific #2, 2019 consists in showcasing FAO’s gender-related work at country and regional levels thus contributing to FAO’s strategic objective 6 – Technical quality, knowledge and services. More specifically, this publication intends to share stories, events, publications and activities related to gender and rural women in the Asia-Pacific region with relevant stakeholders on a regular basis.
