Under the right enabling conditions local communities have shown an enormous potential to preserve forest landscapes and generate economic and social development benefits. Though their full potential is largely unrealized, their actions are ready to be scaled up to meet climate change mitigation and adaptation targets. A third of forests globally is under some form of management by families, smallholders, local communities or indigenous people, representing some of the most important carbon sto cks in the world. Secure and enforced rights for these groups helps to ensure mitigation, improve adaptation and develop resilience. Learn more about the challenges and issues that remain to put local people in the front of climate change strategies and what FAO and partners are doing to promote the rights and resources of local communities.
