This paper reports on the status of forests in the Maldives. It notes forest areas largely comprise littoral forests used mainly for subsistence purposes and fuel. Coastal protection functions are critical. Demand for industrial wood products is largely met by imports. Housing, agricultural and industrial expansion will be key factors likely to impact forests and forestry in the next 20 years.
