In 2019, Mongolia approved the Law on Food Production and Service for General Education Schools, which came into effect from the 2020-2021 school year, with the aim of supporting healthy eating habits among students. The country’s long-term development policy, Vision 2050, further underscores the need for all students to be included in the lunch programme and for schools to have adequate food production premises, equipment and qualified personnel. Despite progress, challenges remain. As of the 2022-2023 school year, over 380 000 children in grades 1-5 are benefitting from the lunch programme, but the government plans to expand this to all 800 000 students in grades 1-12. Pressing issues include food safety risks, gaps in professional capacity, limited nutrition education and an unreliable supply of diverse and quality food items. More than 40 percent of secondary schools do not meet standard requirements, while dependence on imported food and fragmented procurement systems further undermine food security and quality control.
