Descripción

Agriculture is one of the main economic activities in Common Marketfor Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). The sector accounts forover 32 percent of COMESA’s gross domestic product, provides alivelihood to around 80 percent of the region's labour force, accountsfor about 65 percent of foreign exchange earnings and contributesmore than 50 percent of raw materials to the industrial sector.Recognizing the importance of agriculture, African governments havecommitted to increasing resource allocations to the sector andpositioning COMESA as a strategic regional economic community (REC)providing backstopping and capacity-building to its member statesto enable them to deliver clear results to their respective populations, above all at grassroots level. To achieve this end, COMESA requestedFAO support in the development of a Regional Agriculture InvestmentPlan (RAIP). The project provided assistance to COMESA inthe preparation, review and finalization of the RAIP, includingthe preparation of implementation instruments.
