Agricultural Systems provides a unique venue for research that advances our understanding of agricultural systems through rigorous, interdisciplinary systems analysis. In this editorial, we have attempted to provide evolving perspectives in agricultural systems research, followed by contemporary trends in the journal's scope and current priorities. We reemphasise that the bottom line for manuscripts to be within the journal's scope and to have a good chance of their acceptance is to have a strong natural science or technological foundation, clear systems-level analysis, and methodological innovation or application across multiple agricultural systems. On the other hand, manuscripts that are narrowly disciplinary, purely descriptive, or missing a systems context are likely to be rejected. We encourage authors to carefully consider whether their work aligns with our scope before submission. For editors and reviewers, consistent application of these guidelines will help maintain the journal's focus and quality.
