dc.descriptionen especial tomar en cuenta el tipo de contaminación que se presenta con mayor intensidad y frecuencia, que es la orgánica. Se analizó la calidad de agua superficial de los principales ríos de la subcuenca del río Turrialba. Esta se ubica en la provincia de Cartago y forma parte de la cuenca del Reventazón. Debido a la importancia del recurso hídrico para la zona, por diferentes aspectos sociales, económicos, políticos y ambientales, resultó la inminente necesidad de realizar el presente estudio con carácter académico y científico, con miras a ser un insumo de aporte y contribución a tomas de decisiones de gestión al recurso. El estado actual de la calidad del agua superficial de acuerdo al índice de calidad del agua se clasifica en general como agua de calidad pobre. Lo anterior nos indica la necesidad de operación de un sistema de tratamiento de las aguas residuales considerando las realidades sociales, económicas, políticas y ambientales The quality of superficial water was analyzed for the principal revers of the Turrialba river sub-basin. Due to the importance of the water resource for the zone, for different social, economic, political and environmental aspects, it turned out to be the imminent need to realize the present study with academic and scientific character, with the focus of being an input to contribute to the decisions of management of the water resource. The current condition of the superficial water quality is qualified as "poor" following the WQI ranges. These situation indicates the need of waste water sanitary treatment (mainly organic matter), having into account the social, economic, political and environmental realities.
