This Learning Note explores how qualitative and participatory methodologies provide more inclusive and context-sensitive ways to conduct research in complex environments shaped by inequality, conflict, and diverse perspectives. By emphasizing dialogue, deep listening, and the co-production of knowledge, these approaches help reveal social dynamics, power relations, and local experiences often overlooked by traditional methods. The note also highlights how research can become a relational and transformative process that strengthens participation, collective learning, and action for social change.
