Descripción
The seed champions of Odisha recognizes, documents and amplifies farmer-led efforts in conserving agrobiodiversity in Odisha, India. Across Odisha’s diverse agroecologies, traditional seed systems – once the backbone of resilient farming – have been steadily eroded by the dominance of uniform, input-intensive agriculture. This compendium seeks to reposition indigenous seedkeepers not as passive custodians of tradition, but as active agents of change who are safeguarding climate-resilient crops, local knowledge, and cultural heritage. The compendium brings together lived experiences from districts such as Mayurbhanj, Koraput, and Bargarh in Odisha, and underscores the critical role of community-managed seed systems in enhancing food security, nutrition and farmer autonomy. It also highlights how partnerships – particularly with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment, Government of Odisha, and civil society organizations – can strengthen these local systems through technical support, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
