One of the general aims of the Project is the improvement of fisheries statistics in the participating countries. No wonder, fisheries statistics may be considered as the scientific base of biological studies and investment investigations. Since accurate fisheries information depends greatly on collecting statistical data on a high level of performance, it follows that securing well-trained personnel is essential. Taking into account the continuity of collecting fisheries data, the Project gave much attention to theoretical and practical statistical training of counterparts, supervisors and enumerators in each of the participating countries. To guarantee a full comprehension of statistical operations, besides obtaining valuable information on the total and composition of catches, pilot sample surveys were established as follows: Sudan at Khur Kelab, Saudi Arabia at Tuwwal, Egypt at Port Tawfiq. Although it is well known that a comprehensive study of a fishery, necessitates collecting s tatistical data for a period of at least a year, this report may throw some light on Port Tawfiq Fishing Centre and, in particular, may serve as a simple guide to counterparts in the participating countries when tabulating results.
