| dc.description | The adverse effect of agrochemicals, particularly pesticides, on human health and the environment is a global concern. In the Caribbean region, declines in the sugar cane and banana industries have resulted in an accumulation of disused pesticides. This scenario has been compounded by the confiscation of unlicensed imports, inadequate and inappropriate storage facilities, and a lack of technical and financial resources for life cycle management of pesticides. In addition, combined with the inappropriate conditions of use, including the use of illegal or restricted products, pesticide application poses an important risk to the region’s fragile island ecosystems, which are included in the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund listing of the world’s 35 diversity “hotspots”. Against this background, the project aimed to promote the sound management of pesticides throughout their life cycle in 11 project beneficiary countries in the Caribbean, in ways that would lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and the global environment. | |
