| dc.description | Despite rapid economic growth in the country during the past ten years, the prevalence of malnutrition among young Filipino children remains high As an indicator of chronic hunger, undernourishment in Southeast Asia has generally declined over the past decade, but the rate of improvement in the Philippines has been lower than that attained by other countries in the region Poverty in the Philippines is predominantly a rural phenomenon and the sectors that are most affected are smallholder farmers, fisher folk, newly settled families with young children and landless people In order to address the basic factors underlying malnutrition, the capacity of local governments in the delivery of social and economic services, especially for disadvantaged, marginalized and vulnerable groups, needs to be supported and strengthened In response to this challenge, the Government, through the National Nutrition Council, the Department of Health (NNC DOH) launched the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition ( for 2017 2022 to serve as a blueprint in addressing all forms of malnutrition in the country Of the 12 programmes outlined in the PPAN, eight were nutrition specific, one was nutrition sensitive and three were designed to enable support programmes Local government mobilization was one of the three prioritized programmes underscoring the crucial role of LGUs in delivering nutritional outcomes However, to ensure that nutrition programmes were implemented, it was essential that Municipal Nutrition Committees ( be revitalized in order to strengthen the monitoring of PPAN implementation, especially at local level. | |
