Modeling Temperature and Precipitation Influences on Yield Distributions of Canola and Spring Wheat in Saskatchewan

dc.descriptionWarmer temperatures and variable rainfall are likely to affect Saskatchewan’s production of canola and spring wheat. This study employs moments-based approaches (full- and partial-moments) to estimate the impact of precipitation and temperature changes on canola and spring wheat yield distributions. Environment Canada weather data and Statistics Canada crop yield, planted area, and summer fallow area are employed for 20 crop districts over the 1987-2010 period. Our results show that the average crop yields are positively associated with the growing season degree days (GDD), and pre-growing season precipitation, while negatively affected by extremely high temperatures. Furthermore, the climate measures have asymmetric effects on the higher moments of crop yield distribution.
