We describe and apply a method to determine the net social benefits of science shops. University departments operating as science
shops coordinate research projects for individuals or civil society organizations (CSO) lacking the financial means to turn to professional
consultancy bureaus. Three cases are analyzed; the science shops atWageningen, Brussels and Eindhoven. After investigation, it appears that
under the normal assumptions for the application of CBA, the science shops concerned show positive net social benefits.
