This technical note provides background on the methodology used in research for the flagship report The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO) 2024.The research applies the Phillips and Sul (2009) club convergence test to data on the utilization of different foods in 114 countries to illustrate the process of nutrition transition and assess whether the forces behind globalization, such as trade and foreign direct investment, have shaped dietary patterns that are similar across the world. Although the hypothesis of globalized diets is rejected, the analysis suggests the existence of club convergence in dietary patterns.
