dc.descriptionLas bacterias son extremadamente versátiles metabólicamente, pues pueden tomar diversas fuentes de carbono para su multiplicación, respirar anaeróbicamente y usar múltiples donadores orgánicos e inorgánicos de electrones, entre otras capacidades. También son capaces de interactuar con especies mayores, como hongos, animales o plantas, y estas interacciones pueden ser positivas, neutras o negativas. En el caso específico de la interacción planta-bacteria, mucha investigación se ha dedicado al estudio de la interacción negativa o al estudio de fitopatógenos o microorganismos que causan enfermedades en las plantas, y hoy muchos de los mecanismos moleculares asociados son conocidos en detalle. No obstante, muchos otros microorganismos ejercen un efecto positivo en esta interacción, ya sea mediante acción directa sobre la planta, incrementando la disponibilidad de nutrientes en el suelo, por ejemplo, o de manera indirecta, previniendo la proliferación de ciertos fitopatógenos (Heredia-Acuña et al., 2018). Un análisis de este último grupo de microorganismos (los que influyen positivamente en el crecimiento de las plantas) es el objetivo de este capítulo. Las bacterias que ejercen un efecto positivo sobre el crecimiento o desarrollo de las plantas se conocen de manera global como bacterias promotoras del crecimiento vegetal (pgpb, por sus siglas en ingles). El efecto positivo de estas bacterias se ha otorgado tradicionalmente a su capacidad para incrementar la disponibilidad de nutrientes (nitrógeno y fósforo) y para sintetizar hormonas vegetales (ácido indolacético, giberelinas, etc.) (Compant et al., 2010; Glick, 2012). No obstante, en años recientes, el papel clave de estos microorganismos en la prevención y el alivio de condiciones de estrés como sequía, salinidad sódica o presencia de metales pesados sugiere que más mecanismos están en juego.
