Descripción
This publication examines the vital link between plant health and the right to adequate food, emphasizing that safeguarding plant resources is essential for achieving global food security, nutrition, and sustainability. In a world increasingly affected by climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and persistent inequalities, the health of plants underpins the stability, adequacy, sustainability and accessibility of food. Healthy plants are the foundation of sustainable agrifood systems and support livelihoods, economic development, and environmental protection. The publication positions plant health as a cornerstone for sustainable agrifood systems, biodiversity preservation, and the progressive realization of the right to adequate food for all. It offers guidance on improving national plant health frameworks, promoting sustainable practices and participation of groups in vulnerable situations, including small-scale producers and Indigenous Peoples, in decision-making processes. Ultimately, the publication calls for rights-based approaches to plant health, ensuring that the right to food is respected, protected and fulfilled for all—now and for future generations.
