Zimbabwe has up to 33 million ha of agricultural land and a climate suited to the production of both food and cash crops, and livestock enterprises. However, the low levels of production and productivity in these sectors are major causes of food insecurity and the declining contribution of agriculture. National food production deficits and the inadequate supply of raw materials to industry have also led to low incomes, the low utilization of industrial capacity, and high imports of food and processed products. Smallholder farmers in particular are faced by a series of challenges in their efforts to become integrated into lucrative market chains. The current project was specifically designed to increase smallholder integration into commercial local and export markets by aggregating and linking smallholders through an out-grower scheme.
