Gender-based socioeconomic inequalities are preventing rural women from sustaining and improving their livelihoods. For every 100 men aged 25 to 34 years living below the extreme poverty line, there are 122 women. Women are more food insecure than men in every region, especially Africa. Gender disparities in food security are due to unequal access to resources, services and economic opportunities. Studies show that ensuring women’s equitable access to economic resources and opportunities boosts productivity, bolstering prosperity, food security and economic growth. Based on overwhelming evidence of the value of empowering rural women, FAO has developed a programme to close the gender gap in agriculture by expanding women’s socioeconomic opportunities, contributing to hunger and poverty reduction.
