This desk review provides an overview of the current state of agriculture in South Sudan and assesses opportunities to integrate digital technologies and digital skills within the sector. Agriculture remains the backbone of South Sudan’s economy and a critical livelihood source for most of the population. However, the sector continues to face persistent constraints, including low productivity, inadequate infrastructure, limited market access, fragmented extension and advisory services, and climate vulnerability as well as the ongoing effects of conflict and political instability. Despite South Sudan’s high agricultural potential, including extensive arable land and diverse agro-ecological systems, only a small portion of cultivated land is currently utilized. This limits production and undermines food security. Key staple crops include sorghum, maize, millet, and cassava, alongside oilseed crops such as sesame and groundnuts, which contribute significantly to local diets. Yet agricultural performance remains highly sensitive to climate variability and operational disruptions, particularly due to inconsistent rainfall patterns, weak rural connectivity, and limited availability of modern inputs and services.
