| dc.description | In response from a request from member countries, FAO developed the Surveillance Evaluation Tool (SET) in 2017 to assess animal disease surveillance systems and provide country-specific recommendations for improvement. Outbreaks of livestock diseases can have devastating impacts on people’s livelihoods, and over 70 percent of animal disease can spill over to humans. Strong surveillance systems are therefore critical to identify and respond to human and animal threats rapidly, and to develop efficient disease control programmes. SET provides countries with a comprehensive and repeatable methodology to evaluate animal disease surveillance at all levels (central, intermediate and field), leading to the development of specific recommendations for improvement in the form of a prioritised action plan. An evaluation mission in Azerbaijan was conducted in January 2020 in close collaboration with the country’s veterinary services. The validation of the SET outputs and recommendations by the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of Azerbaijan in the form of a report will provide guidance to the veterinary services as well as financial and technical partners on ways to improve Azerbaijan’s animal and zoonotic disease surveillance, and will contribute to a multifaceted approach to capacity building in the country, and in the region. | |
