This report describes an assessment of the round herring stock based on catch sampling undertaken during the seasons of 1979/80, 1980/81 and 1981/82. Spawning was shown to occur from January through May in each year; and first sexual maturity to occur several months prior to age 2 years. The recruitment of young fish was concluded as taking place between seasons. Yield per recruit estimations indicated that increases above the contemporary levels of fishing effort would be associated with reduce d annual catches; while substantial reductions in fishing effort would be associated with only small consequential decreases in catch. Reductions in the duration of the fishing season while maintaining the fishing efforts constant, were shown likely to be associated with increased catches
