Th e Expert Consultation to Develop the FAO Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries: Recreational Fisheries was held at the Department of Biology and Ecology of Fishes of the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in Berlin, Germany, on 5 and 6 August 2011. Th e Expert Consultation was organized in recognition of the growing global importance of recreational fi sheries in the overall fi sheries sector development and management. Recreational fi sherie s has become an important sub-sector of the fi sheries sector in terms of employment and income generation. Th e Expert Consultation had before it a comprehensive working document on the subject matter. Th e Expert Consultation reviewed the working document and provided specifi c guidance for the fi nalization, publication, dissemination and global level promotion of the Technical Guidelines. Th e Expert Consultation also provided general recommendations on recreational fi sheries ma nagement and development aspects to FAO and other relevant stakeholders.
