The Digital Innovations for a Water Secure Africa (DIWASA) project applies cutting-edge digital technologies to address critical water risks across Africa, with a growing focus on fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCAS). These environments face overlapping pressures from weak institutions, displacement, droughts, floods and limited hydrological data, leaving governments and humanitarian actors poorly equipped to anticipate and respond to crises. DIWASA responds by harnessing Earth observation, cloud computing and machine learning to deliver open-access, analysis-ready water data at basin, national and continental scales.
Implemented by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in partnership with Digital Earth Africa and regional institutions, DIWASA produces water accounts, hazard maps, drought forecasts, and river discharge models that already inform agricultural planning, disaster preparedness and water governance across multiple countries. With support from the CGIAR Food Frontiers and Security Program, these tools are now being adapted for FCAS through applications such as digital twins for flood anticipation in Ethiopia’s Somali Region, water risk assessments with UNHCR and the expansion of the Vegetable Irrigation for Climate Resilience platform in humanitarian settings.
By combining open data, hazard forecasting and capacity development, DIWASA enables anticipatory action, fairer water allocation and stronger resilience in some of Africa’s most vulnerable and complex contexts.
