Over 70 percent of the population of Tajikistan lives in rural areas, and about60 percent of human resources are involved in agriculture. The agriculturalzones in which the yield of major crops is low are primarily in the drylands inthe mountainous and piedmont areas, where small-scale farms are the mostvulnerable. Farmers have poor access to inputs and use mainly farm-savedseed, adversely affecting yields. However, there is considerable potential forincreased productivity through the adoption of high-quality seed of superiorvarieties, improved cropping techniques, more efficient and diversifiedproduction systems, and efficient fertilizer use. The project aimed to provideassistance through the provision of high-quality seed of superior varietiesof wheat, pulses, oil and fodder crops to small-scale farmers andthe establishment of an efficient system of variety maintenance and earlygeneration seed production, as well as the diversification of the wheat-basedcropping system.
