dc.descriptionAgricultural extension has undergone significant transformation over the past five decades. The traditional model – centred on one-way knowledge transfer from experts to farmers – has proven inadequate in addressing the diverse needs of farming communities. This approach often overlooks variations in agroecological conditions and individual objectives, and it fails to engage adult learners effectively. In response to these limitations, the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach was developed. The FFS approach promotes participatory, field-based learning, enabling farmers to observe, experiment, and share knowledge. By integrating ecological principles with non-formal education, the FFS approach fosters critical thinking, informed decision-making, and sustainable agricultural practices. Its emphasis on “learning by doing” creates a collaborative environment where farmers co-develop solutions tailored to their local contexts. As the FFS model gains traction among a wide range of stakeholders – including non-public actors – there is growing demand for structured support and guidance. Decentralizing extension services through FFS and Agropastoral Field Schools (APFS) is essential to scaling innovations, improving productivity, and building resilience within farming communities. These approaches offer a practical and inclusive framework for agricultural development.
