Understanding the economic costs of unhealthy diets, including both direct costs and hidden costs, is crucial for informing public policy discussions on health and agrifood investments, especially in low- and middle-income countries undergoing the nutrition transition.This technical report presents a methodology implemented in the Philippines and Ethiopia, for a country-level analysis of the economic costs of child stunting and of adult noncommunicable diseases attributable to unhealthy diets. The findings underscore the importance of looking holistically at the effect of diet quality on health outcomes. The illustrative findings of how diet quality varies over time and space provide insights with potential policy implications.This approach can be customized and tailored to other countries using nationally representative dietary surveys.
