Resumen
Descripción
The Adriatic Sea is a semi-enclosed basin and one of the largest areas of occurrence of shared stocks in the Mediterranean. Most of the pelagic and demersal fisheries resources in the basin migrate through national waters of different countries during their life cycle, and are shared among the fisheries of at least three countries. Shared fisheries resources are exploited under different regimes in each country, while their transboundary nature justifies harmonized management approaches. Achieving the optimal use of fisheries resources in these regions requires an effective cooperative management framework, based on accepted concepts, such as the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF). However, dedicated support is required to enable the countries in the subregion to develop the capacity (human, institutional and knowledge-based) to cooperate and effectively manage the fisheries resources in accordance with the EAF. Against this background, the project, as part of the longer-lasting AdriaMed programme, “Scientific Cooperation to Support Responsible Fisheries in the Adriatic Sea”, aimed to support the sustainability of marine fisheries and the ecosystem in the Adriatic Sea, taking into consideration environmental, biological, economic, social and institutional issues. The participating countries were Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia.
