Studies on the use of chemical fertilizers at two locations in the principal sugar cane producing areas of El Salvador were conducted during the years 1947 through 1950 by the Centro Nacional de Agronomía. These fertilizer treatments consisted of 16 application rates of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in various combinations ranging from 0-0-0 to 128-128-256 lbs. of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O respectively. The results obtained over the four years period show a highly significant response to application of nitrogen fertilizer at both locations but no response to the application of phosphorus fertilizer at either location. At one location there was a significant response to the application of potassium fertilizer while at the other location there was no response to the application of this material. The yields of the cane crop steadily declined from the first harvest through the fourth but the rate of decline was not as great on the plots receiving application of nitrogen as on the check plots.
