Meeting the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement will not be possible without forests. Actions on forests to reduce emission levels arising from deforestation and forest degradation and to enhance forest carbon sinks are one of the most significant and cost-effective ways to reduce global emissions, while also producing important adaptation, biodiversity, livelihood and development benefits. This high-level Side Event at the 24th Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO), co-hosted by FAO and Poland, will feature a discussion on how to ensure synergies between different land uses and the implementation of article 5 of the Paris Agreement. Locally developed strategies can be developed to ensure action is taken on climate change, whilst simultaneously improving local livelihoods. The outcome of the event will provide input for the further discussions and events on forests to be held during the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 24) in Katowice, 2018.
