Resumen
Descripción
Although improvements in nutrition have taken place worldwide as a result of economic growth and as a natural outcome of health sector development and services, in most countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region the situation has not improved greatly and nutrition has not been given the attention it merits in development plans. The Region faces a double burden of malnutrition that includes both under-nutrition and overweight. The main challenges in the Region with regard to nutrition are inadequate or unclear political commitment, insufficient policy framework and institutional capacity, chronic conflict and natural disasters, inadequate budget to support nutrition, shifting from traditional diets in favour of “fast” foods, insufficient nutrition expertise and lack of intersectoral coordination.
