Rapid urbanization brings both profound challenges and opportunities to meet the 2030 Agenda. Local administrators need to shape new food mechanisms in order to guarantee food and nutrition security, preserve the environment and ensure viable socio-economic opportunities in the agri-food sector. Most lack awareness and are not empowered to play an active role or take effective action. This programme uses city-to-city collaboration, including South‒South and triangular cooperation, to raise awareness and share knowledge among local decision-makers and stakeholders on sustainable food systems and nutrition. FAO acts as key facilitator, bringing cities and towns together to influence policy and strengthen technical capacities for sustainable urban food action.
