dc.descriptionThis paper attempts to summarize the present knowledge of the mackerel resources in the Matacca Straits which are believed to be shared by Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. It contains a summary report and individual country papers. The material was put together following a technical working group meeting of scientists from the three countries. The meeting was held 12-16 December 1983 at the Fisheries Research Institute, Penang, Malaysia. The Director of the Institute, Mr Mohd. Shaari bin Sam Abdul Latiff, opened the meeting and welcomed the participants, whose names are listed in Appendix 5 of the paper. This paper, and the working group meeting on which it is based, are an activity of the project ‘Marine Fishery Resources Management in the Bay of Bengal,’ RAS/81/051, which is funded by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), and executed by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) under its Bay of Bengal Programme. Dr. K. Sivasubramaniarn , Senior Fishery Biologist of the project, acted as convenor of the meeting. The project has a duration of four years; it commenced in January1983. Its immediate objective is to improve the practice of fishery resources assessment among participating countries and to stimulate and assist in joint assessment and management activities between countries shnring fish stocks.
