Despite the enormous agricultural potential of Gabon, the production only covers 43 percent of the population food requirements. This implies a strong dependence of the country vis-a-vis to outside to fill its food deficit. Gabon therefore needs to improve the productivity of its Agriculture which is constantly decreasing across the agricultural mechanization to ensure food security. Many efforts made to improve the level agricultural mechanization in Gabon have given less positive results. This is why the formulation of strategy and implementation plans for the agricultural mechanization as part of the country agricultural policy is now seen as an approach, ensuring the foundations of sustainability in agricultural production. Gabon National Mechanization Strategy (SNMAG) was developed in the framework of the Project TCP / GAB / 3401 "Supporting sustainable intensification of food through mechanization”.
In the framework of SNMAG, agricultural mechanization will be applied along the value chain, to aspects of agriculture such as: animal production, freshwater fish farming, soil preparation, crops weeding, harvest, crops pest and diseases control, irrigation and drainage, transportation, processing and storage of agricultural products.
Levels and the types of technologies used will be in consistent with agronomic, socio-economic contexts and environmental aspects of the country. In addition, mechanization will be based on the use of clean sources and renewable energies to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 7 on clean and affordable energy.
