Palau is a global leader in the protection of marine resources. Recently, increased focus on connections between terrestrial and marine ecosystems and their importance to human health, livelihoods and well-being has raised concerns about forest and agricultural resource use, management and knowledge. The goals were to 1) determine current patterns of use and knowledge of forest and agriculture resources, 2) explore how resource use varies by gender and age, 3) use this information to support the development of inclusive, sustainable and resilient food systems and policies that support connections between forests, human health and well- being. Surveys, key informant interviews and participatory mapping workshops were conducted to identify and characterize the current status of forest and agricultural resource use and knowledge. Results indicate that resource use, management, knowledge, importance to livelihoods and perceptions of threats to sustainability and security varied widely by gender, location, and age. Both local and global threats were identified as concerns. Local policy and outreach done in an inclusive manner recognizing the diverse range of forest users and resources, can increase future sustainability of forest and agriculture resources.
