| dc.description | There are four key arguments for promoting women’s land rights: a. Women’s human rights are violated; b. Women’s key role in food security and natural resource management is not recognized; c. Changing environmental demands caused by climate change necessitate a rethinking of land as a sustainable resource; and d. Soil and land degradation continue to pose as challenges for sustainable development. Women’s participation in Kenya: 1. Only 5% of land title deeds are jointly held by men and women; 2. Only 1% of land titles are held by women alone; 3. 89% subsistence farming labour is provided by women; 4. 70% of cash crop labour production is provided by women; 5. About 32% of households are headed by women; 6. Women’s access to land determines food security; 7. Women’s insecure property rights in assets like land contribute to low agricultural production; food shortages; underemployment and rural poverty across various counties. | |
