The future of antimicrobial use in livestock is a strategic One Health priority for agrifood systems, public health and sustainable development. Antimicrobials must remain available and effective to protect animal health, animal welfare, food security and livelihoods, but their use must be guided by responsible stewardship and stronger prevention. This report shows that rising antimicrobial use is not an unavoidable consequence of growing demand for animal source foods. With coherent policies, predictable investment and incentives that support producers, countries can reduce the need for antimicrobials while strengthening productivity, resilience and market confidence. The economic message is clear. Early action can help manage transition costs, while delayed action increases the risk of greater and more persistent losses from antimicrobial resistance. Preserving antimicrobial effectiveness is a shared global responsibility and a strategic investment in healthier animals, safer food, stronger livelihoods and sustainable agrifood systems.
