This field survey guidance provides easy-to-follow protocol guidelines for technical personnel of national plant protection organizations (NPPOs), particularly in Africa, to survey Bactrocera spp., a key pest commonly called fruit fly. The survey guidance aims to aid in the monitoring, detection, sample collection, and identification of Bactrocera spp., ensuring effective phytosanitary decision-making to manage the pest risk and protect trade in plants and plant products. To simplify identification, this document also provides visuals and guidance on recommended pest traps for the different fruit fly species; as well as references for additional information. The fruit fly was listed as a priority pest of concern by countries involved in the Africa Phytosanitary Programme (APP), an initiative of the International Plant Protection Convention. APP aims to transform pest management across Africa by enhancing the capabilities of phytosanitary personnel, to use science and modern digital technology for effective and timely pest surveillance, detection, control, and prevention. By using this survey protocol for regular pest monitoring, African countries will strengthen early warning of pest outbreaks and enhance the resilience of their phytosanitary systems against plant pests of regulatory, economic, and environmental concern.
