Populations of sharks and rays around the world are in declineas a result of a number of human pressures and there isincreasing concern regarding this downturn. Sharks areimportant target species in a number of artisanal fisheriesand certain commercial fisheries within the Wider CaribbeanRegion and Central America. Both sharks and rays are commoncomponents in bycatch of commercial and small-scale fisheriesin the region. In this context, there was an imperative needfor greater information and data allowing a scientific baselinefor shark and ray populations in the Caribbean to beestablished.
