This report compiles the results of the second consultancy visit to the Pilot Project on Shrimp Culture, sited in Maputo, Mozambique. carried out by the Fisheries Secretary and the Fisheries Research Institute of Mozambique, with the technical and financial support of FAO and PNUD. The terms of reference established for the present activity were: to follow-up the conclusions and recommendations resulting of the first consultancy: taking into account the results obtained by the experimental far m on shrimp culture, readjust the economical analysis included in the previous report: to reconsider the technical points of view included in the first economical analysis, specially rate of conversion for semi-intensive culture activities: to determine de Internal Return Rate for semi-intensive culture activities: and to point out specific guidelines in order to carry out development plannes on the subject, according to given recommendations. The report includes an analysis of the project act ivities, which were distributed as follows: 62.8% to construction of facilities, 27.9% to extensive-culture activities, and only 9.3% of the available time will be devoted to semi-intensive culture activities. As we can see, available time is not enough to achieve project objectives, and to transmit the obtained results to the potential aquaculturists. Also, the report makes reference to the analysis of the obtained results for the first cycle, at extensive scale, in which five species of pena eids shrimp were tested, modifying the original design. After analyzing the production by hectare, results were discouraged, as in the case of pond No. 10 (38.3 kg/ha/cycle), which means that variable costs cannot be covered, giving a loss of US$669. Thus, it is necessary to carry out this experience but at extensive culture level in view that obtained information is not relevant for this type of culture system.
