This publication seeks mainly three objectives: (i) To provide the best available information on the production and destination of urban effluents in key Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, including the generation, collection, treatment and use of urban effluents in Agriculture, as well as the policies, institutional agreements and economic aspects that underpin them; (ii) Show opportunities to consider urban effluents as a resource and key principles for assessing and mitigating the risks of their use in agriculture; (iii) Evaluate the capacities that would need to be developed to maximize opportunities and minimize risks and, therefore, to achieve safer and more productive use of urban effluents in LAC. The report addresses municipal wastewater (treated or untreated) and its use (direct or indirect) in agriculture.
