The Hinterland Environmentally Sustainable Agricultural Development (HESAD) project is a six year, USD 11.14 million project funded by IFAD and the Government of Guyana. The aim of the project is to improve small scale farmers’ access to public services, knowledge and technologies through training and technical assistance in the areas of planning and natural resources management. The project also aims to improve food security and nutrition through the promotion of crops, fish and forest products that can sustainably improve household diets. In October 2020, the HESAD project underwent restructuring, with the aim of accelerating investment and achieving the desired outcomes and impacts among Amerindian populations. The project required additional data to support the restructuring initiatives and an assessment of the food security in the region. FAO assistance was therefore requested to obtain data for the baseline scenario of the HESAD and to provide information on the state of food and agriculture in the region.
