Abstract: Gastrointestinal nematodes are responsible for looses in sheep and goat production systems. Among them, it can be remarked Haemonchus contortus, which causes anemia. This anemia can be detected by Famacha method. The aim of this study was evaluate the estimate cost of Famacha method in decrease of economic looses, increase of productivity of the herd and meat and milk quality. It was used 98 female goats and 87 female sheeps, in Tanzânia (Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia grass, with water and minerals ad libitum. The goats received 400g/animal/day of protein and energy suplementation. The costs were estimated each 7 days, during 10 weeks, in the same period that Famacha method was used. The costs of production were estimated by sum of anthelmintc and the labor time spend doing FAMACHA procedures. Among the animals that receives anthelmintic treatment, sheep was the most susceptible to infection (33%) than goats (13%). This can be due to differentiated feed. The costs labor was the same between groups (P>0.05). The total costs were higher in sheep than in goats due to the high number of animals that received anthelmintic treatment. The cost with the use of famacha method was reduced, once just the animals that present high anemia were treated with anthelmintic. So, the high cost with mão de obra compensates the reduction of gastos with anthelmintics.
