After decades of steady advances in the global fight against hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, we are now witnessing a reversal of the progress made: in the last two years, the number of undernourished people has increased, taking us back to the figures registered a decade ago. Meanwhile, other forms of malnutrition are also on the rise: overweight and obesity affect almost four out of ten adults, leading to a significant surge in diet related non-communicable diseases
NCDs in both the developed and developing world. At the same time, 1.5 billion people are affected by one or more forms of micronutrient deficiency.
This leaflet highlights the impact of the FAO Strategic Programme's on ensuring that issues of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, including issues of micronutrient deficiencies, obesity as well as diet-related NCDs are discussed, prioritized on global and local agendas and comprehensively addressed.
