The article presents the changes that have occurred in farms specializing in milk production in the EU countries selected because of the similarity of climate and a different economic history, including different periods of participation in the European Union. It has been demonstrated that in spite of the process of bridging the gap, the results of production and the economic situations of farms from the EU-12 still differ significantly from those which occur in the holdings of the older member states. This also applies to Poland, where an additional problem is the considerable fragmentation of holdings. / Synopsis. W artykule przedstawiono przemiany, jakie dokonały się w gospodarstwach specjalizujących się w produkcji mleka w krajach Unii Europejskiej, wybranych ze względu na względne podobieństwo klimatyczne i rolnicze oraz odmienną historię gospodarczą, w tym różny okres uczestnictwa w Unii Europejskiej. Wykazano, iż mimo procesu zmniejszania dystansu, wyniki produkcyjne oraz sytuacja ekonomiczna podmiotów z krajów UE-12 nadal znacząco odbiega od tej, jaka występuje w gospodarstwach ze starych krajów członkowskich. Dotyczy to także Polski, gdzie dodatkowym problemem jest duże rozdrobnienie gospodarstw.
