Serious challenges confront effective pesticides management by sub-regional and national institutions responsible for coordinating and supervising the production, importation, distribution, use as well as disposal of obsolete pesticide stocks in African countries. The recent experiences of FAO and AU/IAPSC confirm that initiatives towards promoting harmonization of pesticides legislation/registration within countries in a sub-region is a viable mechanism for more effective management of pesticid e matters. Against the background of this experience, the FAO Regional Office for Africa organized a regional work on the harmonization of pesticides legislation/ registration to explore procedures and institutional arrangements for pesticides management in West and Central Africa. This special issue of the FAO/ECOWAS Pesticides Management Newsletter focuses attention on the outcome of this important workshop.
